Travails with An Aunt
I finally know that the time has come to hang up my Gedcoms. Today, I found myself wrestling with a work of fiction in which the main protagonist is, at one and the same time, the grandmother and the aunt of the heroine.
Thomas Hamburger Jnr is best known for his frequent contributions on the darker side of genealogy in the influential Birkenhead Beagle, alongside such illustrious counterparts as Bill Blunt, Johnny Mercer and Frederick C Marple.
A passionate interest in family history led seamlessly to the creation of one of literature's more self-effacing characters, the dogged genealogical detective, Harry McFry.
Mr Hamburger lives modestly with his housekeeper, Madame Bertha Voigneux, in a house on the outskirts of Barrington, New Hampshire.
